We are not golf course architects, we are Landscape Architects who understand nature and the game of golf. And we care about the planet, our future, and the future of the game. As we endeavor to make golf courses more resilient, we are careful to respect the design of the course and intended play. What do we mean by Golf Course Resiliency?
It’s about creating spaces where nature and golf coexist, where environmental stewardship is as integral to the game as skill and strategy. Through thoughtful, forward-thinking design, golf courses can transform into living, breathing ecosystems that reflect both the game and the natural systems of the site.
One of the most exciting aspects of golf course resiliency is the focus on diversity—not only in the plant life but also in the variety of playing experiences it offers. By embracing the unique qualities of a given site, we are able to transform courses into ones that are uniquely connected to their surroundings, offering players a chance to engage with the natural world in a way that is fresh and authentic.
Courses with varied terrain, indigenous plants, and diverse wildlife add a layer of excitement and unpredictability. A well-placed native area could now act as a micro-ecosystem, while a fairway lined with native shrubs, perennials, and wildflowers might change colors with the seasons, providing a unique experience every time you play.
One of the first steps is reimagining the relationship between the course and the surrounding environment. Courses that once relied on vast amounts of water can begin to embrace strategically integrated native areas to reduce water use. These plants are suited to the local climate and require significantly less water, creating a win-win situation for both the environment and the golf course's long-term sustainability/resiliency.
Golf Course Resiliency represents a shift from traditional ideals of perfection and maintenance to a more harmonious, adaptive approach to the game. In this new era, golf courses are more than just places to play—they are dynamic, evolving ecosystems that balance the needs of the sport with the health of the planet. Golf Course Resiliency is a promise that golf can, and will, adapt to the challenges of tomorrow, all while maintaining the spirit of the game and honoring the natural beauty that has always been at its heart.
